These are some of the most popular campgrounds so make reservations online especially if you plan to camp during the summer or on a weekend; there are good backup campground alternatives. Ponderosa, Nacimiento and Plaskett Creek campgrounds are all good but not so popular.

My #1 all time favorite Big Sur Campground: Just 25 miles south of Carmel inland in the Big Sur River Valley on PCH-1 Pfeiffer Big Sur California State Park of California Campground is the biggest and best in the Big Sur area offering camping at over 200 campsites in a variety of shapes and sizes for both tents and RV's (water spigots are plentiful but no hookups or dump station); most sites are in the beautiful deep shade of the towering redwood forest, some camp sites are right by the river, all have picnic tables and fire rings. Facilities include more than ample restrooms with hot showers and a laundry room. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park has 1,006 beautiful acres. It is best to make reservations online. The Soberanse fire was started by an illegal campfire !!! DO BE CAREFUL! !! follow the rules, regulations and thank goodness fire restrictions were lowered from IV to Level II (11/29/16) so you can have campfires and barbecues in designated areas ...Notice of November 19, 2016, Los Padres National Forest fire restrictions dropped to Level II Fire Restrictions; campfires and charcoal fires allowed in designated Campfire Use Sites: outside the sites no campfires, no charcoal fires, portable stoves and lanterns require fire permit to name a few; click for the complete current restrictions, regulations and requirements. click for current regulations

Nice...running water, showers, the forest, the sea; a tad expensive but that seems normal these days: Limekiln Creek California State Park and Campground is by the beach on PCH-1 half way between Carmel and Cambria. There are restrooms with running water and hot showers; it is great for tenting or car camping and ok for campers, trailers and RV's (does NOT have a dump station or RV hookups); The park campground has 33 campsites all with picnic tables, fire pits, and pedestal barbecue grills; my favorite campsites the ones in the redwood forest along the beautiful Limekiln Creek, others are in the ocean view chaparral some sites are right by the beach. It is best to make reservations online. 831-667-2403.

Kirk Creek Campground - breath taking ocean view campsites

Ocean View Campsites at Kirk Creek Camp
Running water would be nice but the only other thing lacking at this campground is likely to be an available camp site, you can reserve online: Kirk Creek Campground is 45 miles north of Cambria and 60 miles south of Carmel on the west side of Pacific Coast Highway 1 up on a 100 foot Big Sur coastal bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. You can see the beautiful ocean and magnificent Big Sur coast right from most campsites. Campsites are mixed, there are about 30 campsites total; most all are nice tent campsites, some but not all are suitable for RV's up to and over 30 foot (1 pad is 56 feet long) but there is no water, and no hookups or dump station. This is a very popular campground so you probably want to reserve online. Fire wood and bottled water are available from the campground host. Good hiking trails and Jeep roads across the highway and nice beach, Sand Dollar Beach is just down the road. Parks Management Company 805-434-1996
When Kirk Creek is impossible to get into like summer and some weekends try Ponderosa, Nacimiento or Plaskett Creek
