Information: The old Capital of Spanish California and west coast trade center and maritime and cultural leader “Monterey” has a rich history, much of it preserved in its museums, waterfront environment and historic Spanish architecture. The flourishing fishing and canning industries started to vanish began to be replaced by tourist the tourist trade in the 1950’s. With the exceptions of Six Flags, Disney’s amusement parks and Knott’s Berry Farm there is no more fun place to vacation than Monterey.
Near Points of Interest: I enjoy reflecting on Monterey’s old Spanish influences by visiting preserved historic places like the Customs House and Pacific House Museum. The areas appreciation of the environment is reflected in the magnificent Monterey Bay Aquarium and it should be on everyone’s bucket list; if you have already seen it you should consider going again they are always renewing it. Cannery Row and Old Fisherman’s Wharf are also must do for Monterey visitors; get something to eat and you may even want to consider taking a boat for a whale watching excursion. If you have time you should also take advantage of this areas culture by taking in some live performances and art galleries. If you have little ones the Children’s Museum “My Museum”, and Dennis the Menace Park are also incredible.
Beach Access and Day Use Parks & Picnic Areas: The City of Monterey has 36 beautiful and diverse parks and beaches; many of parks feature barbeque grills, sports fields, playground equipment and other amenities; Here is a complete list of Monterey City Parks and what they have to offer. There are two of the parks down on the waterfront: McAbee Beach is a tiny but nice sand beach at the foot of Hoffman Avenue on the ocean side of Cannery Row and San Carlos Beach which marks the end of Cannery Row, right beside the Coast Guard Pier at the intersection of Cannery Row and Reeside Avenue. The biggest and best is Monterey State Beach which offers picnic and barbecue facilities as well as many other amenities; The beach runs all the way from the north end of Cannery Row Monterey through Seaside, at El Monte Ave and Park Ave/ Highway 218 west of Highway 1, Seaside, California 93940 (831-649-2836).
Best places to Eat:One thing that many places along the Pacific Coast Highway 1 lack is good fast food; like your will not find major franchise fast food places in Cambria, Big Sur, or Carmel but Monterey has all big name fast food joints and even some great not so common ones like Jonny Rocket’s Chipotle, (Sorry the closest IN-N-OUT is in Salinas about 20 miles). I also enjoy eating on the waterfront when in Monterey and I think most all the restaurants in Monterey are good and TripAdvisor lists 198 Monterey Restaurants! Loulou's Griddle In The Middle is listed as the most popular.
Nearby Hotel Lodgings & Resorts: When in the area I usually stay at the Carmel River Inn which is about 5 miles south of Monterey Bay but if you want to stay right near the water and walk to all the major bay-side attractions I would suggest the Holiday Inn Express Monterey on Cannery Row but there are also many hotels and motels in Monterey.
Near Campgrounds: The closest camping is to go south on PCH 1 then inland up Carmel Valley Road, Saddle Mountain RV Park (831-624-1617); itis primarily an RV park but they do have some tent sites, it’s about 11.5 miles from Monterey. Also there is a Monterey County run park the Laguna Seca Recreation Area (888-588-2267) which is about 10 miles from Monterey on highway 68 which offers Salinas Valley views with both RV and tent camping with hookups, running water restrooms with showers and miles of trails on the Fort Ord Public Lands. About 27 miles south then east is Botcher's Gap Campground.
